Pelosi Statement on National Day of Prayer

Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the 53rd anniversary of the first National Day of Prayer:

"Today, on this National Day of Prayer, all of us from our different faiths and traditions pause to thank God for our blessings. We also turn to God in prayer seeking wisdom and discernment during these challenging times. Our prayers are part of our work to build a better nation and world.

"Holy Scriptures tell us to minister to the needs of God's creation-our children, our poor, our loving and struggling families. Also our ministry through prayer must be about the larger events of the day - for peace and freedom, for truth and understanding.

"Today, in every church, in every temple, and in every mosque around our great nation, men and women of good will are praying for peace, freedom, and the fulfillment of God's mercy.

"The Gospel of John says: 'Dear children, let us love not in word or speech, but in deed and in truth.' Let us commit on this day that our ministry of prayer will turn into ministries of action-acting out God's love in the world.

"My prayer today is that God's spirit and grace will illuminate the earth. Let freedom ring-in the United States and throughout the world."
