Pelosi Statement on Israeli Independence Day

Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Israeli Independence Day:

"In a dark century that witnessed many terrible events of war and bloodshed, the founding of the state of Israel was the shining star of the 20th century. It was a moment of hope, redemption, and freedom not only for the Jewish people but for people everywhere. All people in all nations are entitled to freedom, security, peace and prosperity.

"There is an unbreakable bond of friendship among the United States of America, the State of Israel, and the Jewish people. The United States stands with Israel because of our common history - two beacons founded on the ideals of liberty, justice, and religious freedom, forged by pioneers, and fulfilled by immigrants in search of a better tomorrow. We stand with Israel because of our common values, and because it is in our national interest to do so.

"Sadly, even as we celebrate Israel's 56th anniversary, anti-Semitism is surging around the world. This week, world leaders will convene in Berlin at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe for a conference on combating anti-Semitism. As the 55 member states and advocacy organizations gather, I urge them to take strong action against mounting hatred and intolerance. It is with pride that I commend my fellow House Democrats, Congressmen Alcee Hastings of Florida and Ben Cardin of Maryland, who are helping to represent the United States in this vital effort.

"Israeli Independence Day is a cause for celebration and a call to renewed vigilance against anti-Semitism anywhere in the world."
