Coffman Statement on Administration's Decision to Tap Strategic Oil Reserve

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO), member of the House Natural Resources Committee, released the following statement today in response to the Obama Administration's announced plan to release 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve:

"The Obama Administration cannot open up the valve on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve anytime it simply wants to alleviate market pressures for political gain. The Reserve was established for use in national energy emergencies only and today's move sets a terrible precedent. Instead of depleting our emergency reserves the Obama Administration should stop blocking efforts to expand onshore and offshore domestic energy production, and support proposals that would create jobs, lower energy prices and lessen our dependency on volatile sources of foreign oil and gas."
