Jordan on Passage of Balanced Budget Amendment

Statement

Date: June 15, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Constitution

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) issued the following statement following today's 20-12 passage by the House Judiciary Committee of H.J. Res 1 -- proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

"With the passage of a strong balanced budget amendment by the House Judiciary Committee, we are now one step closer to putting our country's spending on a fiscally sustainable path.

"Today's action demonstrates the commitment of House conservatives to changing the tax-and-spend culture of Congress. The American people have spoken loud and clear that Congress should balance the federal budget, just like families and business owners have to do every day.

"Even with a debt crisis looming, liberals in Congress and in the White House still want to spend like there is no tomorrow. We need bold action to get the country back on track. This balanced budget amendment, which is part of our 'Cut, Cap and Balance' plan, is exactly the medicine we need, and I call on my colleagues in the House and Senate to pass it and send it to the states."
