Hartzler Calls for Leadership From President Obama on Cutting Debt and Creating Jobs

Statement

Date: June 1, 2011

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) emerged from a White House meeting today with President Obama asking, "Where is the President's leadership on reining in our out-of-control debt and helping Americans get back to work?"

"Today's meeting at the White House sent the same message to President Obama as last night's House vote against raising the debt limit without substantial spending cuts," said Hartzler. "We have to stop spending money we don't have! That is how we'll cut our historic debt and that is how we'll create jobs. The President says he is concerned about preserving the full faith and credit of our government. I am, too. But while the House has put forward a concrete proposal to bring down the debt by cutting spending, the president refuses to offer a plan of his own."

"We need to find ways to cut spending in all areas," added Hartzler. "The current path is unsustainable," Hartzler continued. "It's costing us jobs, stifling our economy, and taking us down the road to national bankruptcy. It's time for President Obama to lead by backing up his words of concern with actions and a plan. House Republicans are leading. The President must follow suit."
