Statement of Congresswoman Bono

Clarification on the Congresswoman's attendance at the
Republican National Convention

"I am in full support of President George W. Bush and his re-election effort. I am pleased that the Republican National Convention will secure the nomination of this great president and leader as well as unite the Republican Party as we face tremendous challenges in the coming years.

I will not be attending the Republican National Convention this year as some time ago, my family and I decided that it would be the best use of my time to stay home to work in my district and be with my children.

I am pleased that the convention will feature moderate voices of the Republican Party, such as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, that are more reflective of the modern and mainstream GOP. I commend vice-president Cheney for his statements on the gay marriage issue and I also believe that this is a matter best left to the state rather than meriting a constitutional amendment. Although I do not support gay marriage, I do believe that our party's focus should be on issues of greater concern to most Americans such as national security and improving our economy. It is my hope that the convention, and the Republican Party as a whole, will not focus on divisive issues, but rather on those that unite us.

I commend President Bush and the remarkable convention staff that have worked tirelessly to produce this important event. I hope that this will be a successful convention that paves the way for the re-election of President Bush in November."
