Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) released the following statement today after voting against a $2.4 trillion debt limit increase with no spending cuts or budget reforms attached:

"We can not consider raising the debt limit without substantial cuts in spending and a systemic change in Washington's spending culture. It is easy to simply continue spending and borrowing. But our government has done that for too long. Almost nine percent unemployment and over a $14 trillion national debt is proof that throwing money at every problem is not a viable solution.

"Congress has a responsibility to the American people to rein in wasteful spending. My generation elected the officials who made the irresponsible decisions to excessively spend and borrow. Therefore, today's political leaders have an obligation to solve the nation's debt problem and not simply pass the burden onto our children and grandchildren. Every child born today already owes $45,500 in debt they did not create. High debt means a future of high interest, high inflation, and low jobs."
