Colorado Wins $6 Million Education Grant to Turn Around Low-Performing Schools

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Polis Authoring Bill to Strengthen School Turnaround Grant Efforts

Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) applauded Colorado's receipt of a $6 million grant to help turn around consistently low performing public schools. The federal funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education as part of its School Improvement Grant initiative. Polis will soon introduce legislation codifying these grants to fund effective models and has long supported and protected their funding in Congress.

"Every child in Colorado deserves an excellent school, which is why I strongly support innovative reforms that will transform the lowest performing schools into success stories and their students into achievers prepared for college or a career," said Polis. "My legislation will insist that schools reform and perform. Schools that improve student outcomes and hold teachers and administrators accountable for results will be rewarded. There is no reason why any child in America should be forced to attend a school that is failing."

Polis' school turnaround legislation would provide funding to reform low-performing schools and to reward those schools that have made significant progress in raising student achievement and growth, closing achievement gaps, and in the case of high schools, increasing graduation rates.
