Mikulski, Cardin Announce Federal Funds for Veterans Assistance Programs in Maryland

U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin (both D-Md.), today announced the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has awarded almost $1.9 million to Maryland programs that offer job training to veterans to help them succeed in civilian careers. The grants are part of the DOL's Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) and Veterans' Workforce Investment Program (VWIP).

"In this tough economy, I'm concerned about jobs, jobs, jobs," Senator Mikulski said. "Our veterans serve their country with honor and bravery, and deserve our help when it's time for them to find civilian employment. These grants will provide veterans in Maryland with the tools they need to find jobs and begin life after their service in the military."

"Our veterans have sacrificed for our nation and we now have an opportunity to provide them with the training and skills they need for careers in the civilian workforces," said Senator Cardin. "This important funding from the Department of Labor is well targeted to help Maryland veterans make the transition from military service to civilian employment."

The following Maryland organizations received grants:

- $1,099,000 for Way Station, headquartered in Frederick, which assists veterans with obtaining and retaining employment

- $499,695 for the Veterans Workforce Investment Program in the Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region to provide career guidance, placement assistance, and green jobs training for unemployed veterans

- $300,000 for the Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training Center, designed to provide services to veterans, including those who are homeless, to help them rejoin their communities
