U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre:
"The people of China have suffered under the crushing yoke of Communist tyranny. The lamentable persecution of courageous dissidents, including those who lost their lives at Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, reminds us that freedom does not come without cost.
"The efforts of those who peacefully stood up against the Chinese regime at Tiananmen in an attempt to bring democratic reforms to the oppressive communist country will not be forgotten. Such acts of bravery alter the sequence of our history and leave a lasting and positive imprint on the world.
"The courage and spirit of the Tiananmen Square heroes continue to inspire us. Although their families are denied the simple act of publicly honoring their lost loved ones in China, the rest of the world, particularly those individuals who are also fighting on behalf of freedom, will remember the Tiananmen Square heroes and keep them alive in our hearts."
