U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed her opposition to Article 230 of Ecuador's Penal Code, a statute which imposes a fine and/or prison sentence for individuals who offend the government or President of Ecuador. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"Rafael Correa continues to use all means at his disposal to punish those who dare to speak the truth about his undemocratic rule.
"Correa has reportedly used Article 230 over 350 times in the last four years. And now, with the new powers given to him in the recent referendum, Correa will have even more control over the media and those who stand in opposition to him.
"I applaud the efforts of those who continue to stand up for freedom of expression in Ecuador and the respect of all fundamental freedoms in that nation and around the world. We must ensure that no U.S. assistance is used by Correa to suppress freedom in Ecuador."
