Congressman Brooks Votes Against Debt Ceiling Increase

Tonight Congressman Mo Brooks (R-AL) voted against President Obama's request to increase the debt ceiling by 2.4 trillion dollars to a record high of 16.7 trillion dollars. The bill to increase the debt ceiling, H.R. 1954, contains no spending cuts or deficit reforms and failed on a 319 to 94 vote (Republican vote: 236-0 against; Democrat vote: 97-82 in favor; 17 congressmen either did not vote or voted "present").

"We face national bankruptcy and insolvency," said Congressman Brooks. "Yet, President Obama refuses to cut up the credit cards and stop spending, even though the White House projects a record high $1.6 trillion deficit for this fiscal year alone. By asking the House to approve a debt ceiling increase without any cuts or reforms that address the underlying deficit problem, President Obama treats the symptoms but not the disease, thereby killing jobs and threatening America with bankruptcy."

Brooks continued, "Simply put, the government must stop spending money we don't have. We must get spending under control. I will not vote to increase the debt ceiling without fixing the underlying deficit problem via large spending cuts or a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution."

"Without spending reforms, our children will inherit the worst economy in American history," said Brooks. "Already, 42 cents out of every single dollar America spends is borrowed, and our children and grandchildren will be forced to pick up the tab. Stealing from your children and grandchildren is irresponsible and reprehensible."
