Congressman Tierney Calls Republican-led Hearing on Rising Gas Prices a Political Show

Press Release

Date: June 2, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas

At this morning's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on rising gas prices, Congressman John Tierney, former Chairman of the National Security Oversight Subcommittee, will call on Committee Chairman Darrel Issa to stop holding hearings that amount to no more than a political show. Rather than "drilling" administration witnesses about failed policies that do nothing to lower gas prices or help families, Tierney will argue that Congress must eliminate oil industry subsidies and further reform the role that speculative oil traders play in maintaining high gas prices.

"Today's Republican-led hearing on rising gas prices is nothing more than an example of political showmanship," said Congressman Tierney, who two weeks ago called on Committee Chairman Issa to hold a comprehensive hearing to examine the degree to which prices have been artificially inflated by Wall Street traders and possible illegal market manipulation. "We need to take real action to immediately lower gas prices for our families."
