U.S. Rep. Timothy V. Johnson issued the following statement today following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address before a joint session of Congress.
"This speech was timely, inspiring and carried a message of ringing clarity that I can only hope the Obama Administration heeds. I was frankly embarrassed last week when President Obama issued his call for Israel's return to the 1967 borders. This shows a complete lack of understanding of the history, geography and dynamics of the Mideast.
"Israel is and has been historically our strongest ally in this war-torn region. Defensible borders are paramount, not for territorial reasons but for the fundamental physical protection of its heroic people. Recognition of its right to exist is paramount. Israel is a shining beacon of prosperity, industry, democracy and religious tolerance within a sea of tyranny.
"Prime Minister Netanyahu today showed both graciousness in reiterating a willingness to accept a two-state solution, and strength in forcefully articulating Israel's interests. As Israel's ally since its founding in 1948, we must spare no effort in protecting her security and right to exist.
