Hastings: Governor Scott and the Florida Legislature Trampling on the Rights of Florida Voters

Statement

Date: May 20, 2011
Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Issues: Elections

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-Miramar) made the following statement in response to Governor Scott signing HB 1355, a controversial bill overhauling Florida's election law:

"The dastardly denigration of Florida's citizenry by the Florida Legislature and Governor cannot go unnoticed and/or unchallenged. These people have turned the clock back 40 years, so that they have a political advantage. After the stolen election of 2000, I helped lead the charge to pass the bipartisan Help America Vote Act. I cannot simply stand by and not help to challenge the backward actions of the Governor and Legislature. The NAACP, ACLU, and League of Women Voters should all challenge this backward action in federal and state courts. If they don't, I will."
