Press Release

Date: May 21, 2011
Location: Sacramento, CA
Issues: Women

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) joined the Sacramento Chapter of the Older Women's League (OWL) for their monthly meeting to discuss her opposition to the Republican budget plan that would privatize Medicare and severely cut funding for Medicaid. Over thirty OWL members were in attendance.

"The Republican's 2012 budget proposal would have a significant impact on many of these older women, and on the things they work for each and every day as part of the Older Women's League," said Congresswoman Matsui. "Their voices and their advocacy will be critical in ensuring that Medicare and Medicaid remain intact moving forward. Today's meeting was another opportunity to have an open discussion about ways that we can reduce spending while also making sure seniors' benefits are protected."

Congresswoman Matsui is the Co-Chair of the Congressional Task Force on Seniors, and has been an active opponent of the proposal to privatize Medicare and cut Medicaid, introduced by Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI). In recent weeks, the Congresswoman has hosted press conferences, spoke on the House floor, held a Telephone Town Hall with over 16,000 participants, and has visited local senior centers to discuss the plan.

About OWL

Founded in 1980, OWL is a nonprofit membership organization, and the first and only national organization to focus solely on the concerns of midlife and older women as they age. Utilizing the expertise and experience of members through a network of chapters, OWL has established themselves as a national voice for older women--a segment of the population that has long been unrepresented. The Sacramento Capitol Chapter of OWL was chartered in December 1980. The Chapter holds monthly open meetings to study and discuss issues, plan actions, and provide mutual support.
