The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3, The No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Act on Wednesday afternoon. It passed with bipartisan support 251-175, with 16 Democrats joining the Republican majority. H.R. 3 prohibits government funding of abortion and funding of insurance coverage that includes abortion (with exceptions for rape, incest, or when a woman's life is at risk).
"Today, the House affirmed the American people's desire to prevent taxpayer-funded abortion," Congressman Huelskamp said. "We are finally codifying the Hyde principle government-wide, making sure that Americans are not asked to fund an act that takes human life. The courts may have said a woman has a right to an abortion -- an interpretation with which I disagree -- but there is nothing about having a right to an abortion courtesy of the American taxpayer."
"It is my firm belief that innocent human life deserves protection. It is often said that a society is judged by how it treats its weakest members. If that is the barometer by which this society is to judged, then America is failing because millions of defenseless unborn children have fallen victim to Washington's willingness to permit abortion."
"Despite his claim to be pro-life, Majority Leader Reid does not have a good history of allowing votes on these sorts of issues. I am hopeful that he will put politics aside for the sake of principle, and allow the Senate to vote on this critical piece of legislation."
