I joined Ranking Member Ed Markey and 45 of my colleagues from around the country asking the Appropriations Committee to fully fund the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program in Fiscal 2012. About 300 families in the Northern Marianas receive help on their CUC bills from LIHEAP; and with utility costs rising it is no time to cut funding. But both the Republican majority in the House and the President have targeted this help for low-income families. The President wants to cut the program in half, from $5.1 billion down to $2.57 billion. In FY10, the CNMI received $84,148 in LIHEAP grants.
