Weekly News Brief - Police Week

Statement

Date: May 14, 2011

Friends,

This week I'd like to take a moment to recognize the nearly 1 million courageous law enforcement officers in this country and solemnly honor the memory of nearly twenty thousand more who have given their lives over the years to protect our communities.

We should always remember that we go about our daily routines in safety, because law enforcement officers in our neighborhoods are maintaining order. Police officers understand their vital role to maintaining a free and civil society. They selflessly serve to protect our businesses, homes, and our families -- despite facing frequent danger.

I proudly wore the badge of the King County Sheriff's office for 33 years. The law enforcement community becomes like family; your brothers and sisters. You celebrate victories together and, unfortunately, help each other mourn the loss of another. We have already seen 68 deaths this year; 2 in Washington state. Last year, 152 officers were killed in the line of duty.

It's a job we all need. It's a job we all respect. Tomorrow, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, please take the time to thank the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.
