House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1231, a bill to foster greater American-made energy. The legislation would increase American offshore production and reduce foreign imports by nearly one-third. In a speech earlier this year, President Obama called for a similar reduction in imports over the next decade.
"President Obama has claimed he wants to reduce America's reliance on imports of oil; yet his administration pursues policies that will yield greater dependence on foreign sources while allowing millions of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in potential revenue to go unrealized here at home," said Chairman Price. "American families are struggling with higher gas prices and limited job opportunities which is why Republicans are taking action to address both our energy and our economic challenges. Under the president's moratorium, the United States has to watch the rest of the world expand their energy markets and create jobs as we sit idly by with vast resources untapped. House Republicans have taken several concrete steps to encourage and expand energy production here at home. As energy prices remain high, we must do all we can to influence the market and that includes expanding offshore exploration and production of American-made resources."
