Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Robert Hurt (R-VA) released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 1230, the Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act, which expands American energy production and creates jobs by requiring the Secretary of the Interior to conduct oil and natural gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore Virginia that have been delayed or cancelled by the Obama Administration:

"Rising gas prices remain a top concern for the people of the 5th District. Skyrocketing energy costs are directly and negatively impacting families and small businesses across Central and Southside Virginia, costing jobs, and threatening our economic recovery.

"Today, House Republicans took action to help reduce the pain at the pump. By expanding our domestic energy production and supply, we will take a significant step towards lowering gas prices, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and creating thousands of jobs for the Commonwealth.

"I look forward to the House continuing its work to promote energy independence and address this issue that affects all 5th District Virginians."
