CARCIERI STATEMENT ON BUDGET & CASINO VOTES
2004-07-23

Governor Donald L. Carcieri today issued the following statement regarding the House of Representative's vote to override the Governor's veto of the FY 2005 state budget and the Senate's vote to override the Governor's veto of the Harrah's casino bill.

"I'm profoundly disappointed that the Rhode Island House of Representatives chose to override my veto of the fiscal year 2005 state budget. By approving this budget plan, the House missed an opportunity to rein in state spending and to invest in Rhode Island's economy. At the same time, this budget directly undermines separation of powers legislation that the General Assembly approved just last year, and chips away at executive branch authority."

"I am pleased that the Senate abandoned its unprecedented and quixotic effort to approve a last-minute amendment to the state constitution. However, I am dismayed that the Senate chose to approve the unconstitutional Harrah's casino bill."
