Congressman Keith Ellison released the following statement after he voted "no' on the passage of H.R. 3, which restricts women's access to legal health care services:
As a proud supporter of a woman's right to choose, I strongly oppose the Republican legislation that will undermine women's health and raise the cost of health care for small businesses. Republicans want to hurt women making private and legal health decisions by taxing health plans that -- among many other services -- also offer coverage for abortion. This assault on women would affect 87 percent of private health plans if enacted into law. Despite the misleading title No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, this bill has nothing to do with public funding of abortions, which has been prohibited by law under the Hyde Amendment for over 40 years.
This legislation is just the next ploy in a long line of distractions to cover up the embarrassing fact that after being in the majority for over five months, House Republicans have still not offered even a single bill that will create a single job. Let's stop the sideshow of attacking the rights of women and get back to what the people want: creating jobs.
