Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said she was pleased that federal regulators are coming to Portland tonight to hear from Maine fishermen on the tuna quota for the upcoming fishing season. Originally hearings had been scheduled throughout the northeast but didn't include any in Maine. Pingree called Eric Schwaab, the top fisheries official in the Obama Administration, and asked that a hearing be scheduled in Maine and officials responded by scheduling additional hearings in Portland and in Fairhaven, MA.
"I'm glad regulators scheduled this meeting tonight and I'm glad they extended the comment period so they could hear first hand from Maine fishermen," Pingree said. "It's always been my experience that the best information and the most common sense approach to fisheries management comes directly from the fishermen themselves. That's why meetings like this are so important."
