Congressman Jim Matheson, a co-chair of the bipartisan Panama Trade Promotion Caucus in the U.S. House, released the following statement today after U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk reported that outstanding issues around the U.S.-Panama Trade Promotion Agreement have been resolved:
"I'm pleased to learn that the U.S. and Panamanian governments have resolved outstanding issues around this agreement and officials are ready to take the next steps to advance it. Panama is an important market for Utah products such as processed foods, machinery and electronics. In fact, nearly one-fifth of all manufacturing workers in Utah depend on exports for their jobs.
Panama remains a close and important ally in Latin America and this agreement will further strengthen ties between our two countries. I look forward to passage of the Panama Trade Promotion Agreement by the Senate.
