Democrats Hypocritically Hide Behind False Debate to Stall Progress on Budget Debate

House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement in response to Senate Democrats and President Obama's hypocritical opposition to passing a troop funding bill or coming to agreement on a bill to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Their inaction could force a government shutdown and withhold payment for our brave men and women in uniform.

"Congressional Democrats and the Obama Administration are playing a hypocritical and purely partisan political game that could lead to a government shutdown and the delay in pay for the brave men and women defending this great country," said Chairman Price. "Their opposition to the troop funding bill -- which a bipartisan majority passed in the House yesterday -- is particularly inexplicable and inexcusable seeing as President Obama and members of the Democrat leadership in the House and Senate have previously supported components of that bill -- including the ban on taxpayer funding for abortions in D.C. For them to now use that as an excuse to oppose providing troop funding and certainty for those carrying out the defense of our nation is reckless and incomprehensible.

"This is clearly not about policy for the Senate Democrat leadership. It is entirely about politics because they realize the American people do not stand with Democrats in support of the status quo spending binge in Washington. They have continuously refused to make the necessary cuts in spending to get us on a course to putting the nation's fiscal house in order. Republicans have and continue to fight for higher spending cuts because we know, as do the American people, that if Washington does not get the spending under control, our economy will suffer and more jobs will disappear. I call on our Commander-in-Chief and Senate Democrats to pass the bill to support our military and their families immediately and to end their stale, partisan political games so we can reach agreement on how much to cut spending for the remainder of this fiscal year."
