Austin Must Receive Additional First Responder Funding
August 10, 2004 - Rep. Smith released the following statement regarding the arrest of a Pakistani man in Charlotte, N.C., after authorities found videos in his possession showing several landmarks in Austin and other Texas cities.
"Today's information again confirms why Austin must receive additional first responder funding from the Department of Homeland Security. Federal first responder programs have been slow to improve homeland security because they are not risk-based.
"Austin's large population, its status as the state capital and other factors demonstrate that the threat is higher than the threat faced in many of the 50 states. I am working to ensure that federal funds reach the men and women on the front lines. Terrorists are not arbitrary in selecting their targets, and we cannot be arbitrary in protecting our nation."
