Rep. Blake Farenthold (TX 27) is a co-sponsor of H.R. 1297, the Ensuring Pay for our Military Act of 2011. This bill was introduced by U.S. Representatives Louie Gohmert (TX 1) and Jack Kingston (GA 1).
House Resolution 1297 would continue pay for members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard in the event the rest of the federal government is forced to shutdown on Friday.
"Since the Senate has failed to pass a long-term budget, it is a very real possibility that the federal government will shut down on Friday at midnight," said Farenthold. "Our economy and thousands of federal employees face uncertainty as the deadline approaches. A government shutdown would affect every part of our country, including our service members."
"The United States has operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and now a third front in Libya. Our military service members should not have to fight for our country abroad and worry about their families at home," said Farenthold. "This bill would ensure that members of the Armed Forces are paid even in the event of a government shutdown. "
H.R. 1297 has been referred to the House Committees on Energy & Commerce, and Transportation & Infrastructure. Representative Farenthold is a member of the latter. The bill currently has 52 co-sponsors, including most of the Texas delegation.
