Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) celebrated a Department of Education School Improvement Grants (SIG) award of $4.23 million to the state of Connecticut to help improve persistently low achieving schools.

Part of $546 million made available to states through this program, these critical funds will be used to transform struggling schools in the state. School districts will compete for SIG funding by proposing to use one of four innovative methods, ranging from replacing the principal and half its teachers, to closing the school and re-opening as a charter school, and overhauling the curriculum. The application progress will begin this spring.

"Nothing we do in Congress is more important than ensuring the next generation of Americans has the tools and the opportunities to realize their dreams-- and a quality education is a key part of that. My parents taught me the value of education, and I understand how important it is that today's children have access to the best we can provide for them," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "These funds will help high-poverty schools that are striving to better serve their students with the critical financial support they need."
