Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) today released the following statement regarding the Department of Defense and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, which includes a provision that would bar the District of Columbia (DC) from using local funds to provide abortion services for low-income women.
"House Republicans seem willing to risk a government shutdown in order to shut down a woman's right to choose. This extremist legislation is yet another attempt to appease anti-choice activists who wish to turn back the clock on women's health and reproductive rights. Today's bill would restrict access to legal abortion in DC, but it won't stop there. House Republicans are committed to pushing our nation down a slippery slope with the ultimate goal of undermining the right to choose from coast to coast. This bill would be devastating for low-income women and families in DC who may have to postpone paying for basic needs in order to save for an abortion. Telling DC how to spend its money is also quite the exercise in hypocrisy from a party that worships at the altar of local control.
"The place for a discussion on abortion is in family rooms and doctor's offices, not the federal budget. It's time to stop playing politics with women's lives. We should reject this bill and get back to the important job of funding the government for the rest of the year."
