Sam Johnson Backs Major Cuts in 2012 Budget Plan

Press Release

Date: April 5, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) threw his support behind the major cuts in the House GOP 2012 budget blueprint, named, "The Path to Prosperity." The plan cuts $6.2 trillion in spending by returning to pre-2008 spending levels, among other things, and restores fiscal sanity.

"It's a fact that you can't spend money that you don't have. Even the Congressional Budget Office computer models stop working after 2037 because they can't fathom how our country can handle the massive mountains of debt created thanks to unbridled government spending. We've reached a tipping point. The time is now to control spending and to say no to piling on mountains of debt on our children and grandchildren. The 2012 budget blue print does that," said Johnson.

In a related matter, Johnson took to the floor of the U.S. House to call on the Senate Democrats to get to work on a bill that funds the government for the rest of the year. Prepared remarks follow. Johnson represents portions of Dallas and Collin Counties.

Remarks as prepared for delivery:

"It's been 45 days since the House passed our bill to keep the government open and cut spending for the rest of this fiscal year. Forty five days, and Senate Democrats still have not passed a bill or come up with a plan to reduce spending.

"The American people have a right to know how we got here. For the first time since 1974, last year when the Democrats ran the House, the Senate and the White House the Democrat majorities failed to do their jobs, failed to pass a budget and failed to pass important spending bills.

"To create a better and stronger America we need to cut spending, balance the budget, pay down the debt and slash the deficit. The American people want, need and deserve better than trying to run a government deep into debt. A sign in my office sums it up well, "It's the spending, stupid.'"
