Congressman Cedric L. Richmond (LA-02) joined Dr. Regina M. Benjamin, the 18th Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu today in celebrating the one year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. After the press conference, which highlighted the local impact of healthcare reform, Rep. Richmond released the following statement:
"One year ago today, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act for America giving every American family, every parent, every child, and every senior access to affordable health insurance. A doctor for every family is what healthcare reform is truly about.
"Over the past year, many Americans benefitted from advancements in healthcare insurance. Young adults under the age of 26 may now remain on their parents' health plan, if they don't have coverage of their own. Children under the age of 19 can no longer be denied coverage by an insurance company for having pre-existing conditions. Seniors are seeing the Medicare Part D donut hole begin to close. More than 4 million small businesses were eligible to receive a tax credit to make health coverage more affordable. In 2014, when the Exchange kicks in, everyone will have greater access to quality care."
