Letter to John Boehner, Speaker, House of Representatives - Vote on S. 388

Dear Speaker Boehner:

We write to request that you immediately schedule a vote on S. 388 which would prohibit Members of Congress and the President from receiving their paychecks during a government shutdown. In addition, the legislation also bars retroactive pay for Members of Congress and the President.

Given that a shut down will cause real harm to millions of Americans, Congress must accept the same consequences if it fails to keep the government functioning and sustaining the economic recovery.

There is no reason that S. 388 which passed the Senate unanimously should be wrapped into broader policy disputes that remain to be worked out. The House must be given an opportunity to vote on a clean bill that leaves no doubt that Members of Congress cannot receive a paycheck while the rest of the nation suffers from inaction on government funding for this fiscal year.

Scheduling an immediate and clean vote on S. 388 will enable the House to send this legislation straight to the President.

We ask for you immediate response. Thank You for your consideration.

Sincerly,
