House Republicans Upholding Pledge to Prohibit Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement as the House Committee on Ways and Means considers H.R. 1232 -- legislation to disallow the use of certain tax expenditures for abortion-related costs. The legislation's prohibitions would not apply to abortion costs in the case of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother as well as costs associated with the treatment of complications caused by an abortion.

"House Republicans pledged to positively represent Americans and ensure that there would be no taxpayer funding of abortion," said Chairman Price. "While it is not a new debate in Congress on protecting the sanctity of life, it is a vitally important one -- particularly in light of the health care law passed last year. Despite claims made by the previous Democrat majority, ObamaCare allows for federal funding of abortion. House Republicans are doing our part to correct this heinous component of an already disastrous affront to health care. This Bill simply puts into law what has been practice in our policy for decades."
