Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following column today discussing the new GOP majority's effort to help lower gas prices and create new jobs through the American Energy Initiative. Full text of the column is included below:
"Rising gas prices are a major burden for American families and small businesses. As gas prices go up, so does the cost of everyday life. It costs more to buy groceries, drive to work, and even get the kids to school. In the 8th District, gas prices are surging well above $3 per gallon. People in Middletown, for example, are paying upwards of $3.50 per gallon. Just like in the rest of the country, these rising prices are hurting job creation and pressing families already struggling to make ends meet.
"The American people recognize that Washington has been a big part of the problem when it comes to the price of energy. America needs serious solutions. Unfortunately, instead we are getting the same old tired anti-energy policies and rhetoric out of the Obama Administration. For too long, these policies have blocked American energy production that would lower costs and create new jobs.
"The Administration has cancelled leases for new exploration, jeopardized new nuclear energy, and imposed a de facto drilling moratorium. They've even pushed a "cap and trade' national energy tax that the president himself admitted would cause energy costs to "skyrocket." If the White House has its way, the EPA will impose a backdoor national energy tax causing gas prices to go even higher. America needs a real plan to provide the type of relief at the gas pump that will allow families to keep more money in their pockets and small businesses to start creating jobs again.
"In the coming weeks and months, Republicans will be taking action with a plan that we are calling the American Energy Initiative.
"The American Energy Initiative is rooted in our Pledge to America. In the Pledge, we said we would help end the uncertainty facing small businesses so they can begin hiring again. We said "we will fight to increase access to domestic energy sources and oppose attempts to impose a national "cap and trade' energy tax.' And that's exactly what we're going to do.
"Under the American Energy Initiative, we will work to stop government policies that are driving up gas prices; expand American energy production to lower costs and create more jobs; and promote an "all of the above' strategy to increase all forms of American energy. In addition, we will work with governors and state officials to identify ways we can help them increase energy production and create jobs.
"The American Energy Initiative will be a sustained, ongoing effort by House Republicans in the weeks and months ahead. To learn more about this plan, visit the American Energy Initiative page on Facebook, or visit my website at www.JohnBoehner.house.gov.
"Through the American Energy Initiative, we will work to help lower gas prices, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and create new jobs. We made a pledge to the American people to tackle this problem -- and we're going to keep that pledge.
