Press Release

Date: March 18, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that $352,267 will be coming to Iowa State University for energy research. The funds will support physics research on icing and de-icing as it relates to wind turbines. Results will be useful for improving performance and durability of wind turbines operating in cold and wet weather.

"In order to continue to grow the wind energy industry, we must ensure we have the best information on how to make this industry efficient and productive in all seasons. I am pleased that ISU is receiving this funding and our schools will continue to be on the forefront of this important research, " said Harkin. "Wind energy has certainly benefited Iowa-- it is reducing our dependence on other energy sources, it is creating jobs in our state and it growing our economy."

Today's funding comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a United States government agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee that funds NSF.
