U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, met earlier today with the Chairman of the Greek Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense, Mr. Konstantinos Vrettos. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"I was very pleased to meet earlier today with Chairman Vrettos to discuss our shared hope for a permanent and lasting solution for peace and reunification in Cyprus. I also expressed my unwavering support for the Ecumenical Patriarchate, whose religious freedoms are being infringed upon by the restrictive policies of the Turkish government.

"Greece has undertaken significant good faith efforts in an attempt to resolve the name dispute with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and it is my hope that a mutually-acceptable compromise will be reached soon.

"I am also pleased with the recent improvements in the economic and diplomatic relationship between Greece and Israel, and I expressed my hope to Chairman Vrettos that the relationship will continue to strengthen and improve.

"The United States and Greece share a strong relationship founded on shared values and a long history of standing together to confront common threats. I look forward to continuing to work with leaders from Greece on issues of importance to both of our nations."
