U.S. Rep. Karen Bass released the following statement marking the 40th anniversary of the Congressional Black Caucus founding.

The statement follows:

"The Congressional Black Caucus was established forty years ago today by pioneering leaders who gave voice to the voiceless and service to the underserved. The founding class of the CBC stood up when too many people sat down. They were few in number but grand in stature, and it was that generation of leaders who planted the seeds for growth that allows the CBC to flourish today. As a new member of Congress, knowing that I stand on the shoulders of giants who have welcomed me here with open arms and a warm embrace has made my transition to this office smoother. We in the CBC know intimately well that the struggle continues within our communities. The needs of underserved Americans require even greater action and attention. This is our charge and our communities are depending on us in Congress to fight on their behalf, and we will not let them down."

Karen Bass represents the 33rd congressional district, which includes Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Culver City and was the 67th Speaker of the California Assembly.
