Rep. Roscoe Bartlett Says House Republicans Doing Everything in Their Power to Prevent Government Shutdown and Cut Spending

Date: March 1, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

In reaction to approval by the House today of a two-week Continuing Resolution, Congressman Roscoe Bartlett said, "I am pleased that the Republican majority in the House of Representatives is doing all in its power to prevent a government shutdown. Before the Washington's Birthday Constituent Work Period, the House approved a Continuing Resolution to keep the government operating through September. The Senate passed no plan. Today, we've approved a two-week temporary bill at the rate of cuts already approved by the House, but based upon spending cuts recommended by President Obama. The ball is once again in the Senate's court and the deadline is this Friday. Government shutdowns are in themselves costly and disruptive. The American public and the federal employees deserve better from their elected leaders. The Democrats failed to pass any appropriation bills for FY 11 when they were in charge of both the Congress and the White House. Instead of a threat of a government shutdown, Democrats should offer a plan to keep the government operating that will rein in the size and scope of federal government."
