Himes Statement on Stop-Gap Spending Bill

Statement

Date: March 1, 2011
Location: Bridgeport, CT

Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement on a continuing resolution that will fund the federal government through March 18. Current spending authorization expires Friday, and the Senate is expected to quickly pass this two-week stop-gap spending bill, which will prevent a government shut-down.

"The stop-gap funding bill we passed today is a necessary and responsible measure to prevent a government shutdown. It makes smart, albeit small, cuts to federal spending and provides a time cushion to negotiate the courageous choices we must make to begin tackling our nation's spiraling deficit. Last month, I opposed the Majority's 2011 spending plan because it was both dangerous and short-sighted. I look forward to working with my colleagues to craft a new plan that helps retool the government to reflect our 21st century priorities of education, innovation, and smart growth, while eliminating obsolete programs we know don't work or have outlived their prime."
