NumbersUSA Endorses Bipartisan "E-LAW" for Mandatory E-Verify

NumbersUSA has endorsed HR 800, the Jobs Recovery by Ensuring a Legal American Workforce Act (E-LAW), introduced last week by House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter of Texas with original cosponsors Heath Shuler (D-NC), Mike McIntyre (D-NC), and Louie Gohmert (R-TX).

NumbersUSA President Roy Beck wrote Carter that his organization "shares your belief that one of the easiest, most effective jobs measures Congress can take is to move illegal foreign workers out of their U.S. jobs, opening them up for unemployed Americans."

E-LAW would require all workers in the United States to have their Social Security or federal taxpayer id number verified through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) E-Verify program as a condition of employment, and applies to both new and existing employees. The bill also requires DHS to report to state unemployment offices all potential jobs opened up through E-Verify, and to post the total number of recovered jobs by state on the DHS E-Verify homepage for public viewing. Further, under the new legislation any American whose Social Security number was discovered being used elsewhere would be notified to help combat identity fraud.

"This is a strong boost to have this measure endorsed by one of America's leading immigration reform organizations," says Carter. "In a divided Congress, this is a bill that we can actually pass into law with bipartisan support, that will provide badly needed new jobs for our 20 million unemployed, and help secure our borders against illegal entry by reducing the economic incentive to do so."
