U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), today made the following statement after questioning both Adm. Eric T. Olson of the U.S. Special Operations Command and Gen. James N. Mattis of the U.S. Central Command in review of the Defense Authorization request of FY2012:

"I am encouraged by our military's continued progress in U.S. Central Commands Area of Responsibility which includes both Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the professionalism and commitment of our special operators who are fighting across the globe against enemies committed to this country's destruction. During my trip to Afghanistan over New Years, I was impressed with the training of the Afghan National Army soldiers, an effort to which our soldiers and airmen of Oklahoma's own 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team started in 2003 and will be engaged in again this spring. I remain concerned about ensuring General Mattis, Admiral Olson and all our military commanders receive the funding and equipment they require to effectively execute their operations. I am also concerned about the impact of continuous deployments is having on our special operators.

"During this time of unease in the Middle East and Africa, I applaud U.S. Central Command's efforts to train foreign military officers. Our International Military Education and Training program is critical to developing and enabling professional military forces across the globe. Undoubtedly, our training efforts with Egypt's military officers has contributed to the professionalism and restraint with which the Egyptian military has conducted itself."
