In response to President Obama's instruction to the Department of Justice not to defend the statues of the Defense of Marriage Act in federal courts, U.S. Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement:
"While the fight for marriage equality is far from over, President Obama's decision to no longer defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal courts is a major civil rights victory for the LGBT community.
"Throughout my career in public service, I have consistently fought for achieving equality for all citizens because I believe that every American deserves the same freedoms and protections under the law.‪
"Discrimination of any kind against a person simply based of their sexual orientation is wrong and it should be prohibited by law. That's why I commend the President for his historic decision in refusing to fight to uphold this discriminatory law. "
