Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) today presented the Purple Heart to Army Sgt. Dan Sullivan, 28, of Arcadia for injuries he suffered fighting in Afghanistan last year.
Sgt. Dan K. Sullivan was knocked unconscious by an IED (improvised explosive device) while on a road-clearing mission in Afghanistan on July 24, 2010. Sgt. Sullivan was taken to Kandahar Air Field for treatment and returned to service two weeks later.
"Our national security depends on young men and women who are willing to put themselves in harm's way for our country," Buchanan said. "It is an honor to present Sergeant Sullivan with this medal on behalf of a grateful nation."
The Purple Heart is a US military decoration awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917 with the U.S. Military.
