U.S. Rep. Karen Bass cast a no vote this evening in opposition to the extension of the USA Patriot Act.
The statement follows:
"The Patriot Act gives government an invitation to invade the privacy and freedoms of law abiding citizens and it should not be extended. This flawed bill was rushed onto the Floor by the Republican Majority, bypassed the committee process, and is allowing a deeply troubling remnant of a Bush era policy to remain on the books.
"A wiretap on innocent civilians and investigations of people's library records is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to government claiming national security needs to overrun individual freedoms.
"When the Patriot Act was first introduced I did not support it, and now I am happy to be here in congress to cast a no vote in opposition to its extension.
"The Patriot Act has been used and abused -- its demise is long overdue."
