Today Congressman David Wu released the following statement in response to the ongoing demonstrations in Egypt:
"The United States deeply appreciates its long friendship with Egypt. I believe it is time for a swift and peaceful transition that accommodates the legitimate wishes of the Egyptian people for human rights and democracy.
"President Obama has spoken out about the "universal' rights of people everywhere. This certainly applies to the people of Egypt. One example of the Egyptian government's overreaction is its termination of Internet and mobile telephone access.
"The demonstrators in Egypt are showing that their nation is no exception to the migration of civilization toward democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei is in a long line of Nobel Peace Prize laureates who have assisted their societies in this migration: Martin Luther King, Jr., Lech Walesa, Nelson Mandela, and most recently, Liu Xiaobo. I applaud this worldwide march forward.
"The United States should support a government in Egypt that will endorse and enforce its citizens' universal freedoms."
