Rep. Susan Davis Statement on State of the Union Address

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) released the following statement on the State of the Union address delivered before a joint session of Congress.

"The President reminded us that our best resource for meeting the current challenges is the American people and their enduring spirit. Like the Sputnik moment the President referenced, our shared goal should be to keep America as the world's leader in innovation, technology and global competitiveness.

"The key for me is education. I have long held the belief and advocated for an emphasis on education quality and on math and science in our schools. Winning the future requires giving our children the world class education they deserve.

"Winning the future also demands that we invest in infrastructure and innovation now, especially renewable energy technology. This translates to job creation across our country, specifically in San Diego as we continue to lead in solar and renewable industries.

"National debt reduction is a must to help create the economic stability for the long term. While reductions in spending will be required, it must be done wisely. We can't saddle our children and grandchildren with a mountain of debt, but we also don't want to sell their future short with reckless cuts, especially in education.

"Democrats and Republicans have a mutual responsibility to come together, find common ground, and work toward a future that we can be proud to pass on to America's coming generations."
