U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., has been selected to serve as vice chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

"One of the most selfless responsibilities undertaken by any Republican United States senator is to lead his colleagues as vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "In this role, the vice chairman oversees the programs and activities of America's intelligence community, advises the leadership on threats and challenges, and crafts legislation to protect Americans. Most of this difficult work is done in a classified setting, which dictates that it cannot be shared with constituents or trumpeted for political gain.

"For the 112th Congress, I have asked Sen. Saxby Chambliss to serve as vice chairman, a role for which he is well-prepared. Saxby's previous service on both the House and Senate Intelligence and Armed Services committees, and his longstanding efforts to understand the various threats confronting the United States will serve him and our nation well in the days ahead."

As vice chairman, Chambliss will lead the key panel with broad jurisdiction affecting national security activities. He will replace Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., who retired at the end of the 111th Congress. Chambliss has served on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for eight years, and served as chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Serving as vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee is a tremendous honor, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to provide proper oversight of our intelligence activities and programs," said Chambliss. "It is a priority of mine to ask the tough questions to ensure that we continue disrupting plots from those who seek to do us harm, and that we are giving our intelligence community the tools and resources it needs to keep Americans safe."

By accepting his appointment to the Intelligence Committee, Chambliss relinquishes his title as ranking member on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, a position he's held for four years. However, Chambliss remains a member of the Agriculture Committee and will continue to play an active role in shaping policy that impacts our nation's food supply.

"With my background and experience, I will continue to be a strong voice on the committee for America's farmers, ranchers and agribusiness, which is a critical component of our economy," said Chambliss. "Agriculture is important to Georgia, and has been an important part of my public service. I'm excited to continue the opportunity to positively impact and shape agriculture policy for generations to come."

During the 109th Congress, Chambliss served as chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Additionally, he served eight years on the Committee on Agriculture in U.S. House of Representatives. Chambliss has been intimately involved in rewriting four farm bills.
