Protecting the Unborn: Rep. Barton Supports Pro-Life Proposals

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) used the 38th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision to highlight several pro-life proposals he supports that are now working their way through the halls of Congress:

"Thousands of people hit the streets of cities and towns across the nation and the state this weekend with one simple message: Protect Life!

"It has been 38 years since Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal, and while pro-life Members of the House of Representatives can't yet overturn this deadly decision -- we are stronger in this Congress than the last one and we are ready to make an impact.

"I am prolife because I believe that all life is precious and should be respected and I back that up with my vote. I have a career 97% prolife voting record.

"As a lawmaker, I believe I have a constitutional and moral obligation to protect those who do not have the power to protect themselves.

"That is why I recently joined dozens of my colleagues to introduce three bills aimed at protecting the unborn.

"First is H.R. 3, which is titled "The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.' The name says it all. This bill would clear up any doubt and make sure that no federal funding could be used to pay for abortion. It also would give doctors the right to refuse to perform abortions if they have moral or religious objections.

"'The Protect Life Act' is even more targeted. Despite claims from those who are pro-abortion, ObamaCare does allow some taxpayer funded plans to cover abortion. This bill, known as H.R. 358, would stop that practice.

"Then there is H.R. 374, the "Life at Conception Act.' It would declare that the unborn are "persons' starting at conception and thereby protected under the 14th Amendment. This would take the fight over abortion out of the courtroom and effectively end Roe vs. Wade.

"Republicans have listened to the people, and we promise to keep pushing forward with a pro-life agenda."
