While strengthening our nation's borders is a priority, I believe a broader, bipartisan approach to tackling immigration is needed. We must ensure that American employers are following the law, hiring legal workers, and paying decent wages. At the same time, our employers must have the tools available to make sure they are in compliance. If a dairy farmer in western Wisconsin hires someone to help with milking, they should be able to check the employee's documentation and be confident that they aren't breaking any laws.
As a nation founded and built by immigrants, we have a proud history of reaching out to foreigners and offering refuge and opportunity to those who seek it. That's why I support comprehensive reform that not only bolsters enforcement of immigration laws but also provides a practical solution for the 12 million undocumented immigrants residing within our borders.
